calling it newtown, united. trying to find a way to seize the moment and get people to change through legislation, largely our culture. it will take a lot more than a law here or there. it will take a lot of thinking and a lot of us rethinking the way we view violence and accept it in our homes. we are absolutely behind the president and his challenge when he was here at newtown high school where i am a proud graduate, it struck home that we have not done everything we can to protect our children. that's just wrong. >> you wrote eloquently and vividly about new and talked about it being a community. it has all of the trappings of what we think of in a typical small town community. i have to wonder, has our definition of the word community changed? communities used to be places that protected themselves and were small enough to keep an eye on their own. realize when someone within the community needed help. have we outgrown the ability to prevent an adam lanza or jared loughner from doing what they are going to do and regain the sense of community? >> that's the right question. that's

today. >>> a group of newtown residents has formed themselves into a group called newtown united. there is not necessarily people who have been politically active in the past or who have had any experience trying to change policies or get certain law enacted. but some members of newtown united headed to washington today. they took the day off from their jobs. they woke up at dawn. they drove to washington to go meet with members of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. newtown united, a group of people at the epicenter of national tragedy. one of the parents who traveled to washington today was lucky enough to have his child, who attends sandy hook elementary come home from that school on friday. but he said today that he is taking action now in the wake of the shootings because he does not think the next time it should just depend on luck. >> every time something like columbine, virginia tech were happening, i would avert my eyes, and i will still think that something will be done. but all those believes were shattered on friday. and now i think we all need to speak up. >>

on washington. that means taking on the nra. they call themselves newtown united. their mission, to reduce gun violence and prevent other communities from ever having to live their nightmare. bill toomey helped put together that group. and earlier, i spoke with him today and his daughter, sierra. i asked them if they have made any progress in their talks with politicians on the issue of gun control. >> we had a series of meetings, actually, to try and begin a conversation in the community around what happened and how we can take this terrible tragedy and turn it into something positive. so what we heard from the senators as well as some of our congressional -- the rest of our congressional delegation was that the moment in time is now. that the tide is turning in this country as it relates to gun violence and what we can do about it. and we want to try and bring the community together as quickly as possible to try and lend our voice to the national voice so that we can really make something meaningful happen out of this terrible event. >> and the name of your group is newtown united. but you s

a little sense of this newtown that maybe our viewers around the united states and the world are not familiar with this part of connecticut and this town. >> it is very remote. earlier today when this was breaking, i described it as off the grid. very remote and rural. gently rolling hilling and thick wooded areas and large properties that are few and far between the pous hows and spread out. definitely the kind of place you would say you could never imagine it happening here. a lot of people say that, but this is not the kind of place you would think something would happen like this. not only that, it's remote in the sense that yes, some people who live here do commute to new york city for work, but it's a long commute. i commute an hour every day to where i live and this is a solid hour and a half. it's a longer commute, but the people who live here live here for the safety and the security and the terrific school system. this is what you hear over and over. we came here because it's the place to be save and secure and ensure our children are going to have a great upbringin
